As the glorious fall temperatures make their way to the Valley, now is the perfect time to emerge from our air-conditioned sanctuaries and reacquaint ourselves with the cooler fresh air. And what better place to spend the early morning or evening hours than hiking on our beautiful desert trails or planting a gorgeous fall garden?

To help you get started with your own fall landscaping and gardening ideas, go take a drive or hike in one of our many desert parks or botanical gardens for inspiration and then follow a few of our tips to help you grow your own fabulous garden here in the Low Desert:
1. For best results, start reducing watering frequency in your garden (but be sure to do so gradually). If you have summer Bermuda Grass, now is the time to scalp it and reseed with Winter Rye grass. As a general rule when the temperatures at night are consistently in the 60 degree range you are ready to plant.
2. For a winter garden replete with broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes and radishes, now is the time to start planting!

3. If having a beautiful flower garden is on your fall to-do list, you might look for inspiration at some of our many valley resorts like the Camelback Inn for planting ideas.

Now is the perfect time for planting annuals. The University of Arizona Plant Sciences Department recommends lobelia, geraniums, alyssum, dusty miller, pansies, blue salvia, petunia, dianthus and snapdragons. Most bulbs such as irises and daffodils can be planted in November.
