It’s becoming more common these days, the kids go off to college to get their degree, fumble around in a still recovering job market, then guess what? It’s time to turn the Pilates studio you converted a couple years ago, back into a guest room (the term guest, loosely translated).
Generation Y, also referred to as the Millennial Generation have been moving back home at record rates. This group tends to marry and have children later than previous generations, with “launch” times getting longer. As a result, parents in their 50s are still supporting children who, in theory, are adults. Meanwhile, elderly Americans are living longer. In 1950, U.S. life expectancy was just over age 68. Today, it’s nearly 79. While this is considered very good news, it does pose a certain challenge for what we refer to as “The Middle Generation.”
“Multigenerational housing has become an emerging niche market”, said Mark Hancock, President of Camelot Homes “and the necessity for responding to this trend in the homes we build is something we’re very aware of.” As a solution, Camelot Homes is offering single family dwellings with double master suites, and in some of our homes the ability to convert fourth bedrooms and garage space into attached guest casitas (what some refer to as the “Granny Flat”)
While many cultures embrace the idea of adult children staying home with their parents and even grandparents, this wasn’t typical of Americans. As a matter of fact, we’ve looked at it for it’s comedic value in T.V. shows over the years. Where was Andy Griffith’s wife? Thankfully Aunt Bea was around to take care of Opie and Andy. Admittedly our spacial issues are a little different than those of other cultures, for example. We like to have at least one wall between ourself and our loved ones…
Camelot Homes can make that transition easier. Besides, you never really used that Pilates equipment anyway…
